Abstract
PYRENEES4CLIMA is an ambitious project designed to strengthen climate change adaptation in the Pyrenees through an integrated, transboundary, and science-based approach. By bringing together institutions from Spain, France, and Andorra, the project addresses the shared climate challenges of this mountain region in a coordinated and strategic way.
The Pyrenees are especially vulnerable to climate change, as reflected in rising temperatures, reduced snow cover, glacier retreat, and an increasing frequency of extreme events. PYRENEES4CLIMA responds to these challenges by generating and transferring applied scientific knowledge to support informed decision-making in key sectors such as water management, biodiversity conservation, natural hazard assessment, and mountain-based socio-economic activities.
To achieve this, the project promotes the development of tools, strategies, and nature-based solutions aimed at enhancing the resilience of both ecosystems and local communities. A core component of PYRENEES4CLIMA is the strengthening of collaboration among scientists, public administrations, and regional stakeholders, encouraging the exchange of data, experiences, and best practices across the entire Pyrenean region.
Another fundamental objective is to raise awareness and build social capacity to respond effectively to climate change, positioning adaptation as a central priority in territorial and spatial planning. At the same time, the project works to harmonize policies and strategies across national borders, overcoming administrative barriers and reinforcing joint governance frameworks.
Overall, PYRENEES4CLIMA aims to establish a coordinated and sustainable management model for the Pyrenees, capable of anticipating future climate impacts, reducing regional vulnerability, and supporting a resilient and prosperous mountain territory.
